Tubby Hayes continues to impress today in much the same way he did way back when these remarkable recordings were first released. Regarded as a big deal, time has not diminished their potency. Nobody ever intimidated Tubbs, check out Clark Terry's ‘Opus Ocean’ (Tubby The Tenor) during which he gives Terry more than a run for his money. The same rational applies when on Tubby's Back In Town his front line partners are James Moody and Rahsaan Roland Kirk. The scenario was such: here was one of the UK's finest not only playing leading US clubs (Manhattan's Half Note, Hollywood's Shelly's Manne Hole, Boston's Jazz Workshop etc), but recording his own albums with leading players of the time without remotely coming across as a poor relative. Quite the contrary. On the Quincy Jones-produced Tubby The Tenor he ploughs through two Sonny Rollins compositions ‘Airegin’ and ‘Doxy’ as though he owned them. And for that day he did. Tubby also contributed two originals ‘Soho Soul’ and ‘Half A Sawbuck’ which didn't make the original vinyl release, but which are included here. The big surprise is some previously unheard music from a November 1964 Boston TV show Jazz (WGBH-TV) where Tubby, supported by the local Ray Santisi Trio, is in an up and at 'em take-no-prisoners mood on a reprise of ‘Opus Ocean’ but includes an illuminating interview with the visitor from over the water. This is about as good as it gets and more.
