Both blurts and growls can indeed be heard on this live duo date recorded at Cafe OTO's intimate Project Space – and much more besides. Rather than going for a long, continuous set, here Roberts, Sloth Racket's baritone sax wrangler, and trombonist Rennie present nine short-ish sketches, taking the opportunity to explore various different strategies for close listening and instant composition. In places, the two instruments delight in imitating and echoing each other, as on ‘Inhale’, where fruity bone and baritone raspberries spurt like twin geysers, or on ‘Gruff’, where Roberts' throaty rumble and Rennie's controlled grumble engage in something like a formal courtship dance, full of flattery and flirtation, as small gestures sustain a tentative dialogue. Elsewhere, it's all about setting up contrasting timbres: for ‘Sneeze’, the trombone lays a paper-and-comb background hum, over which the sax ascends a self-generated ladder of its own design; while ‘Teacup’ juxtaposes flat, percussive slaps from Roberts with Rennie's warm and rounded glow. Two very fine musical imaginations at work.
