In recent years, the astonishingly prolific American composer/improviser Tyshawn Sorey has written contemporary-classical song-cycles, pieces for experimental chamber orchestras, led spontaneous-composition projects with improvisers and much more - but jazz is never far from his mind. In 2022 the classic-covers session Mesmerism and the live quartet set The Off-Off Broadway Guide to Synergism were widely admired, with this year's Continuing likely to be even more so.

Wayne Shorter's slow-walking ‘Reincarnation Blues’ is driven by such a muscular bassline from Brewer and crunching snare hits from Sorey that the groove becomes the song, while the subtle Diehl hints at and delicately embroiders the theme in quietly spiralling runs, trills, and glitters of salsa-like chordwork.

Ahmad Jamal would have loved this trio's account of his own ‘Seleritus’ (as would Miles), which opens as Diehl's wistful melodic trickles curling around a prodding bass figure and softly hissy cymbals, and becomes a punchy emphasis of the harmonies against the groove occasionally reminiscent of The Bad Plus. The 1940s Matt Dennis classic ‘Angel Eyes’ opens at a funereally slow gait over a repeating bass throb, and sustains that mood for almost 14 minutes beneath circumspectly mercurial improv from Diehl and Brewer, and Harold Mabern's ‘What Direction Are You Headed?’ is treated to an awesomely left-field notion of jazz-funk in Diehl's rugged chordwork and Sorey's jawdropping drumming.

Very few jazz piano-trios in that long-honed method's brilliant history can have played with quite this spellbinding equilibrium of understatement and simmering power.
