No matter how hard one tries to be systematic and objective as a critic, at some level subjectivity intrudes. I saw this trio in Berlin a year or so before this recording was made. They were dynamic and funny and the urgency of their interaction with each other made for a compelling performance. At such times, one is aware of a charge that runs through the audience and of a feeling of communion between those on stage and those who watch and listen. Sadly, I’m not getting any of that here. There are moments of fragmentary beauty but these seem disconnected and remote. Here and there, I can sense the communication and empathy I observed in Berlin but, for much of the CD, it as if the musicians, too, remain cut off in their own musical worlds. What a shame, not least because I know just what these three are capable of.
