Featuring 16 reworked songs from Van Morrison's capacious back catalogue, Duets sees the legendary singer-songwriter team up with 16 handpicked partners. Focusing primarily on lesser-known gems – there's no ‘Brown Eyed Girl’ or ‘Moondance’ – highlights include the minimalist blues of ‘How Can A Poor Boy’ with Taj Mahal, ‘Some Peace of Mind’ with the late, great Bobby Womack, the gospel-tinged ‘If I Ever Needed Someone’ with Mavis Staples and the smooth-as-marble ‘Higher Than The World’ (from the brilliant Inarticulate Speech of the Heart) with George Benson. Daughter Shana Morrison impresses on a soul-stirring ‘Rough God Goes Riding’, man of the moment Gregory Porter lights up ‘The Eternal Kansas City’, and Michael Bublé guests on the radio-friendly debut single ‘Real Real Gone’ (from Morrison's 1990 album Enlightenment). If all-star albums such as this often promise much while delivering little, the opposite is true in this case. Morrison is clearly in his element, and Duets illustrates the incredible breadth of his songwriting.
