While any new recording by the illustrious Vanessa Rubin should immediately pique the interest of vocal jazz fans, the singer’s latest release on Nibur Records is especially noteworthy. It’s not only her first solo project since her 2001 album Girl Talk, but also presents the very first all-vocal recording of music by the influential bebop pianist, arranger and composer – and friend and colleague of Kenny Clarke, Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker – Tadd Dameron Drawing from both of Dameron’s autobiographies, research at The Library of Congress, plus assistance from The Juilliard School and other institutions, Rubin has taken a deep dive into Dameron’s vocal output, bringing together classics such as ‘If You Could See Me Now’, ‘On A Misty Night’ and ‘Good Bait’, with five instrumental tunes for which new lyrics have been penned – none more appealing than Rubin’s own lyric for ‘The Dream Is You’ (originally written for Milt Jackson’s 1962 big-band album, Big Bags), which is here retitled ‘Reveries Do Come True’. Featuring arrangements by Jimmy Heath, Benny Golson, Frank Foster, Willie Smith and Bobby Watson, this spotlight on Dameron’s beautiful melodic conception is more than welcome.
