This three-CD box set, comprising 48 tracks is a very good anthology predicated on the ways British jazz between 1966-71 absorbed the electronic tone colours and rhythms of rock music and how UK rock/pop/folk bands absorbed the influence of jazz.
A refreshingly wide-eared approach by compilers Colin Harper and Jon Harrington takes us through examples by the usual suspects – Rendell/Carr Quintet, Joe Harriott, Mike Taylor, Tubby Hayes, Mike Westbrook, Michael Garrick et al – while embracing less familiar fare by the likes of Jethro Tull, Graham Bond, Pentangle, Spooky Tooth, If, Bob Downes Open Music, Manfred Mann, Colosseum, Brian Auger Trinity, Johnny Almond Music Machine, Wynder K Frogg, Keef Hartley Band and more.
It is a study that contextualises its subject well and would have taken quite some record collection to have amassed the albums that provided the examples here. An excellent compilation that deserves to be in everyone’s record collection.
