Originally released on CD in 2004, the 1960s soundtrack CD specialist label Harkit reissue this British jazz soundtrack: a fascinating curiosity from the early-60s that brought together Charles Mingus and Dave Brubeck (who were in London at the time according to the original liner notes by Benny Green reprinted here), with a top drawer cast of UK musicians from the period that included Tubby Hayes and Johnny Dankworth. Film and TV composer Philip Green wrote the large majority of the soundtrack to Basil Reardon's 1962 Ofhe/fo-based jazz feature and it almost inevitably doesn't add up to the sum of its motley parts. But there are enough little gems here among the good, edgy film noir-inflected big band material, moody jazz and tracks that can be bracketed as west coast hard bop. Where else can you hear Tubby Hayes on vibes conversing with Charles Mingus’ bass? Before he became a hit maker, Dave Brubeck leads an animated version of his ‘It's a Raggy Waltz’. The standouts are Johnny Scott (who got the taste for film and went on to be a Hollywood composer) stealing the show with his gorgeous alto sax lead on a ballad version of Philip's Green's theme from 1959 to the film Sapphire, originally played by the Johnny Dankworth Orchestra, and there's a tasty octet led by Tubby Hayes playing on Green's ‘Dedication to Johnny Hodges’. A bonus track exclusive, the dark-hued torch song title theme sung by Valerie Masters remastered from the original stereo recordings. The sound quality is variable in places, but this is still a must-have for collectors of British jazz as well as film soundtracks.
