All Saints were never just going to release a boring old compilation. Instead we have one CD evoking projects by their current roster, plus a second of re-workings by various artists who draw on different heritages, like James Blackshaw, Bee Mask and Bandshell (tearing up Jon Hassell). As befits a label that revels in re-issues, the result is a time bending meld of various musics that are as unique as they are respectful of artists past (and yet to come). Oh, I nearly forgot, Greater Lengths is also a bloody good listen, whether you get off on Chas Smith's pedal steel on Harold Budd's ‘Afar’, the cataclysmic Eastern fanfare of John Paul Jones’ ‘4 Minute Warning’ or the lush theremin on ‘For Her Atoms’. The re-workings (re-inventions) find that 1990s back catalogue re-invented by artists that fall under the glib labels of hip hop, techno and sound design, but whatever the monikers, it's music re-shaped afresh. There's a splendid typo about Rachel Evans who ‘studied music theory at collage’. College it should've been, but collage feels more appropriate.
