This 26-track Hallowe’en-themed compilation is great fun, even if some of the selections (Bobby ‘Boris’ Pickett & The Crypt-Kickers’ 1962 novelty pop hit ‘The Monster Mash’ being the most glaring example) aren’t really jazz. But with contributions from Jelly Roll, Duke, Satch, Bing, Frank and the Empress of the Blues herself, Bessie Smith, there’s plenty of class to elevate the album above fluff status. Fans of early Brit-jazz in particular will find much to enjoy, with 1920s and 30s numbers from Jack Hylton and Ray Noble. Standouts? For me, Ted Heath’s rare and fabulous ‘Swinging Ghosts’ from 1959, and Ellington’s ‘Eerie Moan’ (1933), but you’ll have your own favourites. No trickery – this is a great-value vintage treat and the ideal soundtrack to your Hallowee’en party. Very nice sound and mastering too.
