Jazz loves Radiohead: big hitters like Brad Mehldau, Chris Potter and notably Robert Glasper have all cut versions of 'Head songs. The attraction of this double CD however is that it gives a heads up to many bands, young and international (artists are gathered from Canada, the USA, Germany and Portugal which, if nothing else, reveals the Abingdon boys' cosmopolitan appeal) who don't crop up on the radar too often. There are some refreshing takes on fave songs: Rob Reynolds multi-tracks his sax to give us a positively jolly ‘Creep’ (and that ain't easy!) while in contrast ‘Paranoid Android’ gets a complete Vince Mendoza makeover, lush with strings and a John Barry-like scope. Unfortunately few of the artists go for such re-workings – there's an almost awed respect for the melody, while the mood often stays in that downtempo, minor key mode that can make Radiohead the ultimate bed-sitting room music: you wonder how a Lol Coxhill of yore may have ripped up some of these tunes, but, hey, who said we could have it all?
