A reasonable notion – to gather together bands that were influenced by jazz and R&B soul roadshows, like the Stax epics – and so privileged brass over guitars. But Horn Rock is also incoherent in practice, given that two featured bands use no brass instrumentation at all. What the collection does point up is largely white West Coast musicians drawing on black and jazz influences, traditions very different from the Dylan/Beatles voices that so dominated rock and pop of the time. This is most obvious in the groove and blues tracks, like ‘Buddy's Advice’ from the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Al Kooper's ‘Toehold’ (an Isaac Hayes song) and pre-Clapton Delaney & Bonnie produced by Duck Dunn. Likewise, it's no surprise to find cuts from Tower of Power and Blood, Sweat and Tears. But these are well documented bands: the fun is fettling around in those with a lesser profile. It's good to be reminded of Cold Blood and notably the roistering vocals of Lydia Pense. The band and Pense still belt it out, yet never got the big break of other contemporaries. Tobias Wood Henderson only made the one album, with Dr John buried in the mix, while most curious of all The Flock turn up, featuring Jerry Goodman. While the band floundered after three albums, the fiddle fellow would reemerge in the different context of the Mahavishnu Orchestra, a fact curiously not mentioned in the sleeve notes.
