This anthology of 14 selections is taken from the Resonance label's growing catalogue and is an ideal way of getting to know a label that is making a considerable reputation for itself in sourcing important, previously unissued performances by major artists. It is effectively an overview of what the label is up to – for example, a performance by the Bill Evans Trio during the period Jack DeJohnette played with them (which up to now had been documented by just one solitary album), a performance by the Charles Lloyd Quartet in the period immediately prior to the formation of his famous group with Keith Jarrett, a newly discovered track by the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra and so on. All are top quality performances and its no wonder the label is attracting attention – a feature on the label in The New York Times in December last year described them as “a young label with an obsessive sense of mission”, correctly noting how: “From the sound of the restoration to the package design, Resonance doubles down on the collector's ideal of album as artifact” that has “helped move the label from a roguish upstart to leader in it's field.” Jazz Haunts & Magic Vaults is an ideal introduction to one of the newest and most important jazz labels of our time.
