Even though the words ‘Jazzwise Magazine’ are printed alongside the names of other no doubt supportive organisations and institutions (Polish Cultural Institute, Jazz Forum) on the box of this four-disc set, the link simply stems from the fact that this handsomely presented release has been ‘produced, curated, researched and annotated’ (I quote) by Selwyn Harris, a regular Jazzwise contributor. Allowing for that, I hope you'll believe me when I say that this is a genuinely fascinating collection, and my favourite of the always impressive and highly acclaimed Jazz on Film box sets so far. In part that's because the contents are less familiar to me than, say, the Film Noir or French New Wave sets were – so it's a real voyage of aural discovery. But it's also because all 10 soundtracks were written by just two composers – Krzysztof Komeda and Andrzej Trzaskowski – so there's a chance to trace the shifting and evolving thoughts of two masters of cinematic composition. So among the wide diversity of projects there's unity. And there's a fascinating cast of players, including Tomasz Stańko and Don Cherry (on the soundtrack to Jerzy Skolimowski's 1967 film Le Départ). Both the musical and political contexts of the films and their musical accompaniments are explored in the accompanying 80-page booklet. It's a hugely accomplished project.
