The LA-based Le Coq record label launched last year with a pool of established West Coast musicians. Its first release, a mixed bag compilation of originals, standards and jazz classics, was followed by a clutch of releases including albums by bassist John Patitucci and saxophonist Rick Margitza.

Now the label celebrates its first birthday with a second all-star sampler that expands repertoire and range. The roster of musicians is broadened – saxophonist Chris Potter adds muscle, John Cowherd's Fender Rhodes and drummers Marcus Gilmore and Terreon Gully contemporary bite. And there is a greater focus on original work; the only covers are Horace Silver’s ‘Doodlin” and the standard ‘Yesterdays’, both sung dramatically by vocalist Andy James.

Three tracks feature brass backed by John Patitucci and Marcus Gilmore on bass and drums and arrangements compressing Gil Evans, 1950s cool and hints of Thelonious Monk into an original shape. ‘Whatever You Say’ opens the set with a twist and turn theme, “The Before Times” is a moody showcase for trombonist Michael Dease and ‘Around the Corner’ delivers knockout Chris Potter sax.

Elsewhere, saxophonist Rick Margitza’s articulate tenor is the highlight of three moody broadly-fusion grooves and guitarist Russell Malone lights up the somewhat throwaway ‘Beasley’s Blues’. Great playing, but somewhat subdued.
