A cornerstone of Manchester's live music scene, this Band on the Wall fundraiser compilation presents 10 tracks recorded at the award-winning venue by international artists ranging from Berlin-based collective Jazzanova (‘Boom Clicky Boom Klack’) to Yellowjackets (‘Why Is It’), with all proceeds being split 50/50 between the artists and the venue, which is currently closed for a major refurb until September 2021. The album opens with the explosive energy of Gregory Porter's self-penned “On My Way to Harlem”, a canonical-sounding song from his 2012 album Be Good in which the singer evokes the spirits of Duke Ellington, Langston Hughes and Marvin Gaye. The legendary London-based afrobeat keys player, Dele Sosimi, an erstwhile member of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti's Egypt 80, contributes the impressively vast, horn-rich ‘Lady’. From their 2008 album Bring Us The Bright, Snarky Puppy's ‘Strawman’ is a multi-layered, 11-minute-plus fusion odyssey. Also embracing soul (Charles Bradley's ‘I Believe In Your Love’), folk (Kirsty Almeida's ‘Cool Down Rewind’) and pop (Hafdís Huld's ‘Oldest Friend’), the collection is brought to a beatific close with Bugge Wesseltoft's ‘Singing’.
