Don Cheadle's recent feature Miles Ahead didn’t follow the usual ‘biopic’ rules of time and space so it's ironic that the tracks by Miles Davis from this original soundtrack compilation CD are in tidy, chronological order.

But it's a selection from the Miles Davis discography, as with the movie itself, that refuses to play safe. It starts with a lesser-known ‘Miles Ahead’ cut in 1953 for Prestige followed by a single track from the unsurpassable Gil Evans ‘third stream’ collaboration and Kind of Blue. There's two later 1960s pieces from the second ‘classic’ quintet before the CD moves on to Miles’ electric period. Excellent caustic stuff from Jack Johnson, On the Corner and Agharta follows although some of it is edited down.

The ‘comeback’ period in which the film concludes is represented by an excerpt from ‘Back Seat Betty’ from The Man with the Horn and towards the end we hear the score composer Robert Glasper's mostly non-derivative contributions (earlier there's a short solo piano piece by Taylor Eigsti) including ‘Francessence’, with Keyon Harrold standing in for Miles, a track by a supergroup featuring Herbie and Wayne who appear at the film's coda and a rap ‘Gone 2015’ from the closing credits. There are fragments of film dialogue scattered through the collection which, if nothing else, remind you that you’re listening to a film soundtrack and not a Miles Davis Collection. It's by no means definitive of course, but nevertheless a serious introduction to Miles for those discovering him for the first time via Don Cheadle's film.
