This compilation contains music in its entire form taken from the fascinating new ECM documentary DVD Sound and Silence. Because the film was shot by Swiss filmmakers Norbert Wiedmer and Peter Guyer over a period of five years, nearly all the tracks have been released on ECM previously; the only music not to have been available are two exclusive tracks by the Eleni Karaindrou Orchestra, live in concert in Frankfurt, one featuring Jan Garbarek and Kim Kashkashian. This isn’t a film score in the usual sense but the music here does offer a neat snapshot of ECM’s current musical compass. Tunisian oud player Anouar Brahem and Italian reedsman Gianluigi Trovesi are the most recognisable artists in terms of a traditional jazz element, the latter improvising in conjunction with a suite for orchestra based on a short history of Italian opera that was first presented on his sumptuous 2008 CD Profumo Di Violetta. An ECM compilation wouldn’t feel quite right without the name of Keith Jarrett on it, and not actually being present in the film, it is the only historical track here and on the film.
