This anthology of mainly Scandinavian jazz, or jazz from the north, curated by BBC Radio presenter Fiona Talkington, all taken from the Edition catalogue, serves as a reminder of the extent to which the label has grown since its formation in 2008. It includes several excellent examples of what might be termed the ‘Nordic Tone’ in jazz, all by young musicians – indeed, trumpeter Nils Petter Molvær and Martin France, members of Spin Marvel and represented here by ‘Dust in Eyebeam’, are veritable old men in comparison to the contributions of the young bloods that comprise the balance of this album. The 12 tracks of shifting moods, tonal densities and subtle rhythmic pulses serve to illustrate the variety of the Scandinavian scene, but also offer an important alternative to the more unequivocal American approach. This is not, of course, an either-or situation since the jazz church has always been pretty broad and by opening the door to different approaches and styles of jazz, the richer we are for it.
