Jazzman's excellent Spiritual Jazz series continues its roll, shimmering into 2021 with 24 tracks that respect the past and embrace the present. Alongside the tropes of spiritual jazz – the ecstasy and transcendence, the non-western modes and intercultural blends – is something like reassurance; the movement informed by the likes of Sanders, Haynes and the Coltranes in the 1960s and 70s is clearly in capable hands. Here, the elders are those that have bridged the intervening decades: late drummer and composer Steve Reid, whose ‘For Coltrane', a 2000 track of Afro-Oriental rhythms, is delivered just so. A 75-year-old Idris Ackamoor weaving his tenor sax through The Pyramids' ‘Memory Ritual', paying tribute over chants, electronics and driving percussion.

Highlights abound. British-based treasures Nat Birchall and Chip Wickham are here, the saxophonist all impassioned grace on vibing track ‘The Black Ark', the latter conjuring the spirit of Rahsaan Roland Kirk on the flute-led ‘Shamal Wind'. From Antwerp, Black Flower fold dub and electronics into Ethio-jazz; Canadian octet The Cosmic Range deliver a fractiously beautiful ‘Palms To Heaven'. It's all a balm for troubled times, with the only sour note being the absence of female bandleaders – aside from contributions by astounding Italian alto/soprano saxophonist Carla Marciano (‘Trane's Groove') and US-based vocalist-clarinettist-pianist Angel Bat Dawid, whose powerful ‘What Do I Tell My Children Who Are Black' is a masterclass in pacing and tension.
