Siggi Loch, also known as The ACT Man, record producer and founder of ACT records, was 75 on 6 August 2015. As a part of his celebrations in reaching this significant landmark comes this remarkable box set of five CDs, a very personal choice of recordings that with one exception, a 1940 track by Sidney Bechet and his New Orleans Feetwarmers, have all been produced by Loch himself. It breaks down into a series of phases that give shape to his career in music – ‘The Beginning’, ‘Blues and Rock’, ‘Crossing Borders’ and ‘Visions of Jazz’ before coming up to date with ‘Jazz at Berlin Philharmonic’, an annual series of concerts produced by Loch that is one of the highlights of the Berlin winter season. At one level this collection is testimony to his remarkable achievements, on the other, rather like an evening at the turntable with a friend sharing his musical enthusiasms. There is so much great music on display here it would be a rash reviewer indeed to pick highlights, more appropriate to offer a tip of the hat and a big thank you on behalf of jazz fans around the world for what this remarkable man has done for jazz (and music ‘in the spirit of jazz’) in general, and European jazz in particular.
