A Johnny-come-lately in the marketing stakes, coming as it does after the stable door has shut in Rio and the 2016 Olympics bolted, this compilation of reissued tracks – or at least, 21 out of 30 songs from the previous 2002 and 2004 releases – is nonetheless a fitting snapshot of a country where music is in the DNA and jazz, it seems, is in the water. Smooth jazz, for the most part, deceptively effortless, invitingly laid-back; 1977 opener ‘Happy People’ by US-based drummer and percussionist Airto Moreira – he of Bitches Brew, Weather Report, Return to Forever – is fiercely sunny samba, all rich tenor vocals, squeaky cuica drum interludes and flaring horn-led grooves. Classic tracks by the mighty likes of Elis Regina, Carlos Jobim, Gilberto Gil and on two tracks (including the gorgeous, melt away ‘From the Lonely Afternoon’) Moreira's golden-voiced wife Flora Purim, keep the quality elite. There's mellow 1960s bossa here, of course, along with Azymuth-style 1970s jazz-fusion (performed, indeed by Azymuth) and Banda Black Rio's soulful 1980s grooves. Breathy Portuguese-language lyrics soften all edges, making even the harshest sentiments sound well intentioned.
