This limited edition Record Store Day vinyl LP (pressed on ‘Lake Geneva blue’ vinyl, no less) rounds up some of the outstanding appearances at the legendary Swiss festival over the years. Many of those featured here – Nina, the good Dr, McLaughlin, Petrucciani, Corea– have full albums dedicated to their Montreux appearances (the Nina Simone one, released in 2021, is essential in my view) but with Moments the scoop is that every track is previously unreleased.

So, we get to hear such wonders as Nina Simone performing a unique and strangely upbeat ‘Mississippi Goddam’ (recorded in 1990), McCoy Tyner’s sparkling, fleet-of-finger take on ‘Have You Met Miss Jones?’ (1996), ‘Home’ by Petrucciani’s Sextet (1998), a sassy ‘I Just Want To Make Love To You’ from Etta James (1993) and Dr John’s ‘Tipitina’, from 1986, all in superb, crisp sound quality.

Acting both as a splendid introduction to the 12 already-issued Montreux Years series, Moments is also a mandatory purchase for fans of the artists listed above.
