This meaty compilation takes its name from the recordist Bill Savory who, before becoming a professional engineer, was active from his teens making acetate discs of live radio performances by artists such as those listed above. Some of his Benny Goodman archive was made available in the 1950s by agreement with the artist (any further releases are apparently blocked by the Goodman estate) but, after Savory's death in 2004, it was left to a team led by Loren Schoenberg to rescue and restore his vast legacy. Finally in 2016 the first of four programmes was issued on iTunes, and it's that material plus another couple of hours' worth that now appears on physical CDs for the first time. Many of the artists have, of course, been heard in other airshots, but not often with such vivid reproduction (of these 108 tracks, only a total of three have previously made their way onto commercial albums). It would be prohibitive to try and list the highlights, but a couple that need to be mentioned are the six-minute ‘Body And Soul’ by Hawkins (amplifying his thenrecent single) and a 10-minute slow ‘Blues’ by Hampton featuring Charlie Shavers and Herschel Evans. Plus, of course, virtually everything from two whole CDs of the early Basie band with Lester Young. Despite stiff competition, this could well be the archive release of the year.
