A timely overview of the part of the young London jazz scene grown through channels such as Tomorrow’s Warriors and Jazz Re:freshed which has both fast maturing talent and exciting potential development. The emergence of Ezra Collective has been particularly rewarding to behold and they do themselves proud with modern Afrobeat that is much more engaging than any of the countless Fela pastiches the world has been subjected to in the past decade. Moses Boyd weighs in with skipping synth-led deep house that highlights his skill as a producer rather than drummer, while Nubya Garcia impresses with soulful well-spaced soloing that reflects her appreciation and commitment to the roots of blues-inflected saxophone. It makes sense for Shabaka Hutchings, as the doyen of the aforementioned, to be included and his ‘Black Skin, Black Mask’ maintains his usual compositional standards. Soundwise some of the pieces are just a touch on the flat side, but there is no doubting the strong identities of the artists. The lithe African folk inflections of Kokoroko is a good preview of hopefully more to come.
