As with his haircut, Mike Stern’s playing, especially when ‘guesting’ is very much his own style. But also, with best intentions, pretty predictable.

But then so should it be: Vartiainen hired Stern precisely so he can play like Stern, with those long high tempo runs, that unique tone and a burning energy. Vartiainen, the one-time Leningrad Cowboy, is no mean shredder himself, but it’s Stern principally to the fore on an album that makes no bones of its love for 1970s fusion.

So, the opening loose limbed funker ‘Mixed Up’ sets up chorus upon chorus, with a solid ‘son of Brecker’ sax from Rautio. ‘For Mike’, presumably for the late Mr Brecker, is an elegiac blues, with Rautio strong again.

Leni’s opening ngoni meditation on the title track suggests we may head for different colours and there’s a lift from the vibes glistenings. But we’re soon overwhelmed with a driving beat which is fun, but we’ve kind of been here before, approximately 50 years ago. The guitar duet ‘Waltz for Roni’ is a rare moment of calm, and the closing ‘Blue Velvet St’, again with just the two guitarists swings conversationally, leaving you wishing there was more of the same earlier on.
