Panic not, this isn’t, Zeus save us, another Colosseum reissue (or even an AC/DC tribute, though that would’ve been fun): indeed, despite the title, there’s barely a breath of what might reasonably be defined as jazz rock. Instead there is plenty of free jamming interplay between spry musicians who easily transcend laborious labels like, um, ‘jazz rock’. For example, the opening ‘Free Funk’, is just that, a dirty little drum and bass thing, while in splendid contrast ‘Duetz Duet’ is what it says on the tin, a series of duets as the band pass a raggedy piece of melancholia between them, starting with Cox on cello and Granros on acoustic. The band’s scurrilous wit kicks in on two outstanding covers: the Duke would love their take on ‘Satin Doll’, with clangy keys and Granros playing fast and loose with that lovely melody as the bass and drums do their best to wrestle it to extinction. Covering Ornette’s ‘Dee Dee’ is less surprising, given there’s something of Coleman’s Prime Time about Vector Families electric wonkiness. So, dunno what you’d call this mayhem, but Vector Families we salute you!
