The perspicacious, peripatetic Dave Liebman's CDs of his latest collaborations from around the globe land on your desk these days in the same way the rest of us send postcards of our foreign sojourns. Yet whatever the collaboration, Liebman's unfailing energy and enthusiasm provides the creative spur. Here he shares the creative burden with the Swiss piano trio VEIN, an important voice on the Swiss jazz scene. Liebman and VEIN have been collaborating since 2009, resulting in the live Lemuria from 2012. This, their first studio album together sees Liebman willingly cede his leading voice to that of an equal member of this collaboration — the depth of their growing musical relationship encapsulated in the way they approach ‘All The Things You Are’ as a collective improvisation. The group move seamlessly from formal composition to spontaneous interplay with ease – indeed, three versions of ‘Small Talk’ dotted through the running order of 13 compositions shows Liebman in duo with each member of the trio in turn. Highlights include ‘Stories of a Century’ and a well performed ‘Autumn Leaves’ that suggest this transatlantic collaboration is continuing to grow.
