Less than a year after releasing The Chamber Music Effect, inspired by their lifelong love for classical music, Swiss trio VEIN are back with a tribute to 20th century French composer Maurice Ravel. Many of Ravel's later works were influenced by jazz (“the rhythms of today”, as he put it) so these arrangements of Ravel compositions are a kind of answering back. The reimagined piano works are the most satisfying – you know it's VEIN but you've never heard them sound quite like this. There's some typically outstanding ensemble playing in Baroque-inspired suite ‘Le Tombeau de Couperin’, which opens with a burbling brook of piano, flirting with pastoral melodies, icy harmonies and asymmetric grooves before building to a bruising finale. ‘Pavane pour une infante défunte’ is another highlight – soothing, balladic and caressed by fluttering kalimba. The album's big set piece, a 16-minute reinvention of ‘Boléro’, sees the melody passed around between the trio and a guest horn section, which features the breathy tones of Andy Sheppard. It's hard to make a tune that well worn sound fresh, but the frenzied climax is a lot of fun. Though VEIN plays RAVEL isn't as compelling or as varied as The Chamber Music Effect, the classical world continues to inspire some of the trio's best work.
