Although this is only Pohjola's third album as a leader, he marks his debut on Edition Records with a masterpiece. One of the leading exhibits in Finnish jazz, Pohjola first turned heads back in the early millennium years with the Ilmiliekki Quartet. But as he reminds us in the liner notes, “Suddenly we are not young anymore. It doesn't necessarily feel that way, but you can't ignore the odometer ticking ever closer to 40”. And while he has been threatening to produce the rounded statement of a mature artist with ensembles of varying size for a couple of years now, it is interesting that as he achieves this with Bullhorn. It is in the environment of a quartet with Lötjönen the only hold over from Ilmiliekki, and with Finland's finest young drummer Mäkynen and the talented Aki Rissanen on piano. There are moments of great profundity on this album – ‘He Sleeps, I Keep Watch’ for example – that sets Pohjola apart. He never rushes or strains for effect, rather he seems to have evolved a cliché-free style that progresses by way of graceful ellipses (the title track, ‘Another Day’). Although there are guests (Kannaste on ‘Girls of Costa Rica’ is especially effective, his brother on trombone on ‘In La Borie’ and Iida-Vilhelmiina Laine on cello) this is at heart a quartet recording. In capturing Pohjola's talent in full flower, this album takes its place among the truly finest albums of recent times and sees him graduating from the star-in-the-making mantle he has carried for so long in European jazz, to fully-fledged star.
