“Britain's finest jazz musician, I think,” Ronnie Scott proudly remarks while introducing an old friend to his club on this midwinter evening 48 years ago. By then pianist-vibist-drummer-composer Victor Feldman was a rare sight in London, an Englishman taking a short vacation from the Hollywood recording studios which had become his firm fixture since arriving in Los Angeles eight years earlier. Considering his brief rehearsal time with Laird and Stephenson, he delivers a very slick set here, complete with original intros and bridging riffs. He also emerges as a connoisseur of neglected standards, including ‘A Fine Romance’, ‘In Your Own Sweet Way’, ‘I Thought About You’ and the title track in a set of old favourites (‘Fly Me to the Moon’, ‘Autumn Leaves’) and elegant originals (‘Too Blue’, ‘Azul Serape’). Mostly Vic plays piano, demonstrating the beautiful chord voicings which so impressed Miles Davis, but two tracks also display the vibraphone prowess, which inspired Tubby Hayes to add that instrument to his arsenal. The rating would be higher but for the tinny quality of the original Les Tomkins recordings, taped backstage so that drums and bass both sound louder than piano and vibes. Remastering has its limits, so this session is one for the historians.
