Swedish vocalist Viktoria Tolstoy celebrates 10 years as an ACT artist with this superb new duet album with pianist Jacob Karlzon. Tolstoy is one of a handful of singers who is blessed with a voice that is as singularly beautiful as it is emotionally engaging. On A Moment Of Now she creatively reinvents everything she touches, from Alanis Morissette's ‘Hand In My Pocket’ and ‘Satisfied’ by the UK's lost genius of soul, Lewis Taylor, to Mark King's ‘Lessons In Love’ and Cole Porter's ‘I Concentrate On You’, the latter assuming an almost lugubrious air. Three of the 14 tracks feature new lyrics by Anna Alerstedt (who worked with Tolstoy on her terrific 2008 album My Russian Soul), two of which are standouts: Pat Metheny's ‘A Moment Of Now’ and Karlzon's ‘Scent Of Snow’. The inclusion of ‘Against All Odds’, an immensely powerful ‘Red Rain’ and ‘Taking It All Too Hard’ hints at something of a Genesis subplot, too. Karlzon's varicoloured backdrops couldn't be more apposite.
