Out Of The Sky could only have been made by two artists who share voracious musical appetites, a nine-track collection that seamlessly traverses different musical traditions. From the scene-setting opener, the co-written ‘Blue Breeze’, introduced by Rowe's swooping vocal line answered by Etheridge's lonesome electric guitar, you get the sense of two artists undertaking a shared voyage of discovery. Made famous by the great Miriam Makeba, Rowe's passionate delivery of the Swahili love song ‘Malaika’ is a feast for the ears and the soul. Famously penned by Ellington in 20 minutes, according to his autobiography Music Is My Mistress, the duo's take on ‘Solitude’ fully releases the song's intense communicative power, Rowe's storytelling gifts perfectly matched by Etheridge's meticulously voiced guitar playing. Other highlights include the wonderfully atmospheric ‘Syriac Aramaic Prayer’, the time-bending Hindu mantra ‘Ya Kundendu – Saraswati Sloka’, which draws on Rowe's past study of Hindustani classical vocal music, and one of the loveliest versions of the 1940s standard ‘Detour Ahead’ you’re likely to hear.
