Thrill Box refers to Peirani's instrument, the accordion, which – remarkably – he seems able to wrest a astonishing range of sounds from a vox humana through to a piano, an organ, a Cor Anglais and a flute plus the haunting sound of accordion and voice, percussive sounds and orchestral flourishes. What is special is Peirani's management of these musical resources; opening with a haunting a cappella résumé of some of the sounds Peirani has on offer it gives way to ‘Waltz for JB’ that reveals Michael Wollny's graceful exposition of the melody followed by an equally considered (and apposite) solo. In many ways, this piece sets the scene for what follows, an intimately crafted, unhurried excursion into a range of moods revealing of each musician's lyrical personality.
