It all began with a phone call, the cooking of borsch and a mysterious guest with, we are told in the liner notes, the ‘distinct appearance of a Chinese tourist’. The result was a gig that took place in Shenzhen in 2014; apparently the musicians received a 10-minute standing ovation, with some audience members travelling all the way from Taiwan. The concert was not by the famous Ganelin Trio, who established an international reputation in the 1970s and 80s (and with whom Leo are synonymous). Instead Ganelin is joined by musicians of a different generation: saxophonist Kruglov, who is a key part of the Moscow avant-garde scene, and Yudanov, last heard on the Leo Records 35th anniversary album. There's a lot of music here: it's a double-album, with one solo/duo disc (77 minutes long alone) and a second disc (clocking in at 42 minutes) featuring the full trio. It's all good stuff, though Ganelin's synth sounds occasionally jar.
