London band Waaju describe their music as Afro-Latin crossed with UK jazz – a catchall for a huge range of styles. Their first gig was a tribute to the great Ali Farka Touré and their second album, Grown, still aches with the sound of Malian blues. But you'll also hear silvery Afrobeat guitar riffs, swaggering dub basslines, the bump and grind of dancehall, pattering hand drums of myriad pitches and the trance-inducing cross rhythms of Moroccan Gnawa in there – along with funk and soulful R&B, thanks to a feature for vocalist Will Heard. It all blends beautifully; somehow nothing seems out of place. Of the soloists, sax player Rapley stands out, adding hollers to opener ‘Moleman’, throaty wails to the title track and breathy murmurs to ‘Rollando’, with its gorgeous off-kilter guitar groove. Sometimes the music on Grown feels like a trick of the light: it grooves so hard but it still sounds delicate. Even in the heaviest moments, Waaju play with a wonderful lightness of touch.
