When it comes to vibes players it's never really been an oversubscribed members club. Poised comfortably at the New Directions intersection, Walt Dickerson didn't look to any other vibists for guidance, preferring instead to create horn-like lines with little sustain or vibrato. Furthermore, Dickerson didn't quite sound like any of his contemporaries, be it carefully crafted interpretations of such standards as ‘If I Should Lose You’ and ‘Autumn In New York’, or his own angular compositions (‘Relativity’), he was very much his own man. This was achieved as much by the way he customized his mallets as to the way he gripped them close to the head for added speed and control. His association with journeyman pianist Austin Crowe and the two Andrews – Hill and Cyrille produced intelligent results, which reached its zenith on the absorbing To My Queen album with its deeply passionate title track taking one whole side of the original vinyl 12-incher. In total, a quartet of lost gems.
