This may be their debut album, but there's a maturity and generosity in each others' musical company that makes Wandering Monster just a little special. That specialness could be in Quintana's lustrous writing – strong on melody, big on spacious arrangements – or it may be in the intimate recording sound, warm and assured. Or it may just be that this is a band that's not trying too hard, not throwing their chops in your face, that simply trusts in the music. It's all summed up in the closing track, ‘Happy Place’, a gentle but strong-boned waltz which features a glowing bass break and an increasingly urgent sax from Powling which never loses shape or control. They can get rowdy of course: ‘Tuco’ kicks in with a pushing theme, with echoes of Danny Thompson in Quintana's drive, before breaking down in echoing sax and distorted guitar. And a special call out for Podraza's piano bravely naked, confidently articulate in singular runs and broken chords, the bi-play with Travers' guitar is a quiet joy.
