Vaché is in the form of his life right now and happily, is recording regularly for Arbors, and in good company too. In what is largely a vehicle for his balladplaying, he has Hammer and Wyands as his alternating accompanists, both top men, with Allred augmenting the quartet for one track and Person for three. The brass pair make something both exultant and moving out of ‘Solitude’ taken at a slightly brisker clip than usual, the interplay sympathetic yet resourceful, Hammer adding lustre. Vaché's tasty cornet sound works perfectly on a series of unhackneyed show songs (only ‘Solitude’ could be considered to be over-familiar), his use of mutes varying the mood, as on the yearning ‘I See Your Face Before Me’, with Hammer's relaxed, faintly boppish solo its further adornment. Person is another who knows how to let his sound do the work, spacious and laid-back on ‘Fools Rush In’, taken at walking pace, Wyands' chords like a balm. He's nimble and pertinent on ‘I'll Never Be The Same’, Vaché clearly relishing both his support and the challenges of the song. While fire and brimstone is always a delight, there's room too for this kind of expansive yet subtle jazz and Vaché proves yet again his mastery of the form.
