This material has been recycled to the point of exhaustion. But for newcomers here's a little history. Second Genesis was taped just four weeks after the Messengers live Birdland session that resulted in Meet You At The Jazz Corner Of The World. Recorded a year later, Wayning Moments was sandwiched one month after The Messengers' Mosaic and three weeks prior to Buhaina's Delight. In fact they could be viewed as surrogate Messengers dates. Though he was now installed as the Messengers MD, there was a suspicion that Blakey's bunch were given priority when it came to selecting the best of what Wayne had to offer. Good though they may well be, they didn't always possess the same grandeur of a full-on Messengers session. On the subject of repertoire, five of the eight cuts on Second Genesis were from Wayne, while half of the eight selections on Wayning Moments carry Shorter's copyright. Of the non-originals ‘Moon Of Manakoora’ is perhaps the most perverse choice. Whereas Art Blakey was present to truly fire up Second Genesis, drummer Marshall Thompson appears to be hesitant throughout Wayning Moments. File under: non-essential.
