Sheik Anorak is the nom de guerre of Frank Garcia, boss of Gaffer Records and lynchpin of the thriving underground scene in Lyon, France – a community of young outsiders based around Ground Zero, an ex-toilet factory now a sprawling squat and, until recent hassles with the authorities, live music venue. Anorak's just as comfortable playing wild, freak-out drums with local musicians, but it's as a guitarist that he's gained most attention, particularly through collaborations with uncompromising US drummer, Weasel Walter. Here, he's captured live at London's Vortex with British saxophonist Webster and Led Bib drummer and main man, Holub. Although this is ostensibly a free-jazz trio, Anorak's punk and hardcore roots show through, with the improvisations frequently latching onto gruff rock chugs, which riff-friendly Holub is happy to embellish. Webster's huffs and jabs find an echo in Anorak's percussive, stabbing chords, and there's even a touch of metal excess in some of Anorak's fret shredding. It all adds up to an exuberant, good-natured free-for-all.
