Recorded in Bristol in 1980 with Wadada Leo Smith in the audience (hence the ‘leo’ part of the title), the audience hence the ‘leo’ part of the title this is in some ways a lo-fi release: the liner notes actually request that ‘the off bits and the chat bits’ are received with patience. Yet Anthony Barnett, a percussionist, music historian and poet who has worked with Johnny Diyani, John Tchicai, Don Cherry and Derek Bailey, presents a valuable document here on his AB Fable label. (Sadly, we learn from those same liner notes that he has lost track of ‘beautiful trumpet player William Embling’.) There are moments when one wishes one was in the room like Leo Smith, rather than listening to the recording, but between occasional coughs from audience members are some wonderful moments of in-the-moment interactivity that stand up three and a half decades later.
