First there was Kind of Cool (2015). Next there was Kind of Spain (2017). And now, to complete the trilogy, there’s Kind of Tango, which sees German drummer and bandleader Wolfgang Haffner and his musical buddies head off to Buenos Aires (in their heads, at any rate: the album was recorded in Gothenburg).
The theme of tango was ACT mainman Siggi Loch’s suggestion, and seemingly Haffner needed no persuading: ‘Rhythm is the essence of tango, plus catchy melodies which can then be developed – and there’s so much emotion in it too.’ Indeed, the changes in mood and feeling are smartly planned here to keep things interesting. ‘El Gato’, penned by Haffner and rising German piano star Oslender, is a propulsive, tension-filled musical portrait with some nice lines from Dell on vibes. Most tracks are originals but there’s a dip or four into Argentinian bandoneon player Astor Piazzolla’s songbook, including the lovely ‘Close Your Eyes and Listen’ and ‘Libertango’.
