There's obscure, and then there are records like this. Details are sketchy but it's reckoned that this session was recorded in the basement of a Boston church in either November 1973 or August 1975. The musicians are largely unknown but the presence of Boston spirit-jazz movers Michael Cosmic and Philip Musra signals a depth of intent that resounds through the LP's two tracks. The title cut is a rambling, otherworldly meditation with an eerie, cultish two-note vocal refrain wafting in and out of focus to make room for introspective horn solos. On the flipside, ‘The Prayer’ layers an up-reaching vocal choir and jubilant sax solos over a blissfully deep polyrhythmic jazz waltz. Think Max Roach and Sun Ra collaborating on the ultimate consciousness-raiser and you're almost there. Though short on info, the cover of this impossibly rare private-press release tells you everything you need to know: a hand-pasted montage of smiling faces, digging it in the extreme.
