Phew, fasten the seatbelts you're in for a bumpy ride. Burning enough jazz power to illumine a decent– sized city, WorldService Project don't do compromise: from the opening kick arse and killer riffed ‘Flick The Beanstalk’ we're in a world of blaring trombone, in your face sax and furious percussion. The crazed vox kind of echo the world of Gong, while Zappa's lary mix of fractious humour, dazzling virtuosity and exultant themes is never far away either. But as prime composer, Morecroft also brings a darker side to the epic shenanigans: ‘Chamonix’ for example moves between thuggish brass spikes, a reworking of the Peter Gunn theme and a Weil-like theatricality that leaves you scared of what's coming round the next corner. What lies beneath this sound and fury, well, let the people decide, but for their hi-energy, punkish attack, the WorldService Project deserve their hour in the sun.
