Despite directly inspiring the name of Ellis Marsalis's son, Kelly is nowhere near as celebrated as he should be. In danger of being the forgotten link in the chain that ran from Garland to Evans to Hancock to Corea and Jarrett in Miles' groups, he received high praise from Davis and remained with him from 1959-62.
His two trio albums during that period have been sliced and diced in numerous different ways, including a version with overdubbed strings which fortunately isn't the one here. Corresponding to VeeJay NVJ2-902, this does have two brutal a-rhythmic edits to shorten the bass solos on ‘Sassy’ and ‘Come Rain Or Come Shine’, though Chambers is heard at length in a couple of other tracks (while Sam Jones is credited with a couple more than he plays on, doubtless a fault of the original compilation). The great joy, of course, is hearing Wynton grab whatever the tempo is, with a mixture of groove and decoration, while the rhythm sections swing effortlessly like there's no tomorrow.
