Yarni is a Sheffield-based producer, arranger and ensemble leader beloved of the dancefloor-leaning jazz world and such electronic icons as the late Andrew Weatherall. A self-taught instrumentalist with, it seems, a natural musicality and the patience to spend years honing his craft, the man born Benjamin Harris has produced three albums with intriguing conceptual layers: 2017 debut Entkommen, a musing on the juxtaposition of nature and brutalist architecture in Derbyshire, marked the arrival of a vital new voice in jazz-electro fusion. 2021’s Japan-inspired Boro (named for the country’s patchwork textiles) is a futuristic synthesis involving several traditional instruments, each played by Yarni.

Pigna (named after the ceramic pine cones, a symbol of welcome that adorn the hallways of Sicily) finds Yarni at the helm of a nine-piece ensemble, weaving together improvisations in ways inclusive and streamlined. Inspired by the 1970s funk track ‘Why Did You Do It’ by Stretch, ‘Cherub’ finds swinging saxophone and fat basslines daubed with electronic touches. ‘Nova’ is a gorgeous, melodic amalgam of sounds and genres – breakbeat, Afrobeat and flute-driven spiritual jazz – especially lifted by the celebratory horn playing of fellow Sheff creative Jonoa. There’s an emotive quality to the tracks that enhances their organic feel.

Think electronics in a cashmere sweater: top-quality touchy-feely stuff.
