The explosive Herman has something of Craig Taborn’s attack which in turn leads us back to Andrew Hill’s deep structures. All of which would be formidable enough, as illustrated by Herman’s percussive romp on the aptly named ‘Strive’.
But what really propels Radio Paradise into heady strata is the double-barrelled sax attacks of Grand and Grimal. Swiss-born, New York based Grand is a member of Halvorson’s Code Girl Sextet and has a take no prisoners attitude which at times has Herman scrabbling to keep up. No wonder the helter-skeltering second cut is monickered ‘Trust’. You need sackfuls of that in this band as each artist launches themselves into the fray. Not that Grimal is any less independent: she’s plays from a more beguiling, artsome, dare one say intellectual position making her combo with Grand all the more potent.
Which isn’t to say Radio Paradise is all free-wheeling pyrotechnics. ‘Hymn (for a good day)’ features romantic yet disciplined keys. ‘Vanya’s Song’ is likewise elegiac. ‘Water Lily’ may have a gentle title, but it features grungy drum and bass, with squalling sax nailed down by Herman’s fearsome left hand. If the line up remains the same, Ronnie’s is in for a treat come 30 May.
