I’ve said it before, and I’ll labour it again, but things may come and things may go, but like the art school dance, the Yellowjackets go on forever. It’s fitting that a key song here is called ‘Mutuality’, as this band thrives on the reciprocal give and takes that keep all relationships warm yet ever changing. This is only Alderson’s second recording with the band, but he’s not the new boy here. What gives Raising Our Voice the quick of newness is Luciana Souza’s gorgeous voicings. Sometimes she brings colourings, as on ‘Man Facing North’, other times she takes centre stage, as on ‘Timeline’ which builds to a joyous jamboree. But then Souza can also take it down on the aptly titled ‘Quiet’, singing with a subtle phrasing and mastery of long lines that only the best, like Norma Winstone, can conquer. What’s also new is the old, in that Mintzer is happy to just swing it, as on (mmm, more clues in the title) ‘Swing With It’, with chorus after chorus over classic comping. Love ’em, hate ’em, but the world would have been a lesser place for the last, eek, 37 years without those ’Jackets.
