Brooklyn-based guitarist Yotam Silberstein has recorded and absorbed musical traditions from across the globe, it has been said, ‘with a near-anthropological meticulousness’.
Precision of both performance and documentation marks this new disc, which combines blues, rock and jazz, and combines influences from South America, Andalusia and the Middle East. The core trio – with pianist and accordionist Vitor Gonçalves and drummer and percussionist Danial Dor – is joined by a series of guest performers: ‘Brooklyn Frevo’ and ‘Chorão’ are lively homages to Brazilian frevo and choro and feature the talents of flautist Itai Kriss and, on the former, Valerio Filho on the pandeiro. Carlos Aguirre performs on a number of percussion instruments for ‘Candombe para Ruben Rada’, dedicated to the Uruguayan percussionist, composer and singer. Particularly compelling in its sharp, irrepressible fluency is ‘Etude No. 2 (Merengue)’, based on a merengue rhythm from Venezuela and originally composed as a study for guitar technique, while ‘Tal and Gil’, dedicated to Silberstein's sons, is a lovely lullaby illuminated by the tender harmonica playing of Grégoire Maret.
